With the highly anticipated sophomore album “A Dream Deferred” set for a 10/2 release date, we present to you the new single “Give It Up” (feat. DJ Prince), produced by !llmind (Kanye West, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Scarface).
The single, which mashes vintage dirty hip hop drums and 808s with dubstep grime, is a staple of !llmind’s new signature “boom-trap” sound, which can most recently be found via his production on “The Morning” by Kanye West & G.O.O.D. Music off of the Cruel Summer album. Topped with Sky’s signature “slick talk” lyricism, the song is a subwoofer’s dream come true.

“With this project, I wanted it to be a bridge between “The Great Debater” and “A Dream Deferred”. This mixtape literally picks up where “The Great Debater” left off and leads you directly into “A Dream Deferred”. The tape is split into 2 parts, Theo Huxtable and JJ Evans. The first half of the tape has me rhyming as if I were Theo, with the world from his point of view. Being well off, having to live up to a family’s expectations due to their success, etc. The second half is from JJ’s view, with the sound being slightly more aggressive and the stories built with an “in need of something” attitude. The tape is the idea of the vast contrasts of a life that my people and I dreamed of and aspired to as kids (Theo) versus a life that was more of our reality (J.J.) This one is for US. Enjoy”

…the idea was to demonstrate the feel of being in a dream and I wanted the album to represent that visually as well. Fabian’s work contains his signature star speckled background on all of his designs, so it made sense to use him with the stars representing a dreamy atmosphere. Here he breaks down the meaning behind “Jansport Strings” [One Time For Chi-Ali] produced by 9th Wonder…
“The idea behind Jansport Strings is not based on it being literal, but more so in the figurative sense. As a kid in NY, the strings on your Jansport bag were a sign of power and presence. Kids would steal the strings off of each other’s bags and burn the tips to prevent getting robbed of them once they got them.
The song is a 3 minute auto-bio of me as a kid in Brooklyn and seeing more than my friends and I had bargained for. In essence, my Jansport strings tied it all together, seeing what we all saw and what it made us.
The ending is a clip from Video Music Box, the legendary NYC video show run by DJ Ralph McDaniels. This episode in particular was the debut of Chi-Ali’s ‘Age Ain’t Nothin But A Number’. Seeing that video that day on this episode of VMB made me start rhyming. This clip was literally the moment that changed my life.” - Skyzoo
